Happy, Happy Birthday Gosford Stingrays!
What a great day we had for the 60 year celebration; blue skies, sunny warm weather, newly refurbished 50m pool, impressive turn-out, many hands on deck and smiles all round – what more could we possibly ask for? Thank you to ALL Stingrays members; past, present and brand new, who came along and helped make the day a truly memorable event!
Thank you Sponsors and Achievers …
Thank you YING FA for sponsoring the event and for supporting Gosford Stingrays. Their generous contribution of caps, goggles and impressive swimming apparel will absolutely inspire our swimmers leading into the summer season.
The day could not have happened without all the hard work and enthusiasm put in by so many Stingrays members; cake making, BBQ planning, designing, printing, organising, booking the pool, arranging medals, coaching, photographing … Thank you to everyone who lent a hand, to parents who do a great job supporting their kids in a healthy sport, and to all the kids who turn up to swim with smiles on their faces 🙂
The Day in Photos …
The morning kicked off (un-officially) with the 07:15 squad when the early morning swimmers began the challenge of clocking up 60km in the pool. Some had doubts this impressive distance would even be possible … but don’t forget – this is the Stingrays we’re talking about 🙂
By 9am (the official start) the count had already reached 40 km! The 60 km target was reached at around 10 in the morning … but instead of calling it a day, the target simply moved to ‘the second 60’.
As the day wore on, pool-side became a sea of medals with swimmers parading long-distance achievements in the pool.
BBQ was kept in schmick operation, offering deluxe breakfast, lunch and snacks to hungry swimmers and members of the public enjoying a relaxing Saturday at the pool.
And… in no time the counter reached 82km
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming …
Between laps – time for some play and rest …
… and posing with the President 🙂
Enjoying life by the pool and frolicking with the Stingrays troupe …
Afternoon sun saw the counter reach 180km … three times the target! All smiles and still some laps left in the tank … everyone just kept swimming 🙂
At 3pm – after sterling work by our kilometre counting vice president David, the final results were recorded and announced … ~198 km!
David’s stats from the extended 60km Swim:
- Final swim tally resulted in 197.6km
- Fantastic turn-out – including 15 ex swimmers
- 22 swimmers swam 5km or more
- Adults swam a combined total of 42.05km
- Longest swim = 8.4km
- Shortest swim = 0.1km
Well done everyone!
Well Done & a Special Announcement …
President Tony declared the final result along with congratulations to everyone who took part. Coach Nerida, who supported, swam and helped run the day – gave encouraging cheers to everyone.
Coach Ian was made a life member of Gosford Stingrays. Ian does an outstanding job with all the kids in their swimming activities, truly deserving of his ‘lifer’ status with the club. Congratulations Ian!
The Long Awaited Cake has Arrived
Big thank you to our super chef Kylie for baking and icing the gorgeous birthday cake for the club. Decorated in Stingrays colours; the masterpiece sported teal, blue, black and golden yellow – it looked amazing and proved to be delicious!
Cutting the cake was a combined effort: President Tony, Coaches Ian and Nerida, and super chef Kylie wielding the first cut:
Thanks again everyone for a great day! You can find all the photos in this post in the gallery as well (and if you have a photo you would like to add, do let me know).
See you at club 🙂
